Unknown species
Unknown species, near junction of Georges Rd and Great Northern walk, Watagan Mountains National Park, NSW Australia, July 22, 2006, in Eucalyptus forest, dry with wet gullies, grass trees, abundant leaf litter. Solitary growing underneath hollow eucalyptus stump. Very peculiar pungeant smell (apart from the ants' formic acid smell). Fungus with short eccentric stem, hollowed by ants. Fell apart on touch, very soft texture. Growing on wood, mostly below ground. Fan shaped, 220mm across. White surface, spongy yellow interior. Surface dry smooth. No gills or tubes apparent.
