The computer industry is in the midst of a fundamental change. The change is
from architectures founded on single-processor chips to those with
multiprocessor chips. This will in turn require a fundamental change in how
programs are written. Multiprocessor programming, also known as Multicore
programming, requires new principles, algorithms, and programming tools.
Multicore programming has been practiced on single processor machines for some
time. This has been the narrow domain of specialists in high performance
computing up till now. When multicore processing is performed on the new crop of
multiprocessor machines though, it becomes much more complex. The key difference
is the need to understand how separate processors coordinate with one another,
which is called multiprocessor synchronization. This book promises to be the
first comprehensive presentation of the principles and tools available for
programming multiprocessor machines. It will be of immediate use to programmers
working with the new architectures. For example, the next generation of computer
game consoles will all be multiprocessor-based, and the game industry is
currently struggling to understand how to address the programming challenges
presented by these machines. This change in the industry is so fundamental that
it is certain to require a significant response by universities, and courses on
multicore programming will become a staple of computer science curriculums.

The networking capabilities of the Java platform have been extended considerably
since the first edition of the book. This new edition covers version 1.5-1.7,
the most current iterations, as well as making the following improvements:

The API (application programming interface) reference sections in each chapter,
which describe the relevant parts of each class, have been replaced with (i) a
summary section that lists the classes and methods used in the code, and (ii) a
?gotchas? section that mentions nonobvious or poorly-documented aspects of the
objects.

In addition, the book covers several new classes and capabilities introduced in
the last few revisions of the Java platform. New abstractions to be covered
include NetworkInterface, InterfaceAddress, Inet4/6Address,
SocketAddress/InetSocketAddress, Executor, and others; extended access to low-
level network information; support for IPv6; more complete access to socket
options; and scalable I/O. The example code is also modified to take advantage
of new language features such as annotations, enumerations, as well as generics
and implicit iterators where appropriate.

Most Internet applications use sockets to implement network communication
protocols. This book's focused, tutorial-based approach helps the reader master
the tasks and techniques essential to virtually all client-server projects using
sockets in Java. Chapter 1 provides a genral overview of networking concepts to
allow readers to synchronize the concepts with terminology. Chapter 2 introduces
the mechanics of simple clients and servers. Chapter 3 covers basic message
construction and parsing. Chapter 4 then deals with techniques used to build
morerobust clients and servers. Chapter 5 (NEW) introduces the scalable
interface facilities which were introduced in Java 1.5, including the buffer and
channel abstractions. Chapter 6 discusses the relationship between the
programming constructs and the underlying protocol implementations in more
detail. Programming concepts are introduced through simple program examples
accompanied by line-by-line code commentary that describes the purpose of every
part of the program. The book's Web site contains many examples of command-based
sockets-related code discussed throughout the book. No other resource presents
so concisely or so effectively the material necessary to get up and running with
Java sockets programming.

A unique approach to quantum field theory, with emphasis on the principles of
renormalization Quantum field theory is frequently approached from the
perspective of particle physics. This book adopts a more general point of view
and includes applications of condensed matter physics. Written by a highly
respected writer and researcher, it first develops traditional concepts,
including Feynman graphs, before moving on to key topics such as functional
integrals, statistical mechanics, and Wilson's renormalization group. The
connection between the latter and conventional perturbative renormalization is
explained.

In Physical Realization, Sydney Shoemaker considers the question of how
physicalism can be true: how can all facts about the world, including mental
ones, be constituted by facts about the distribution in the world of physical
properties? Physicalism requires that the mental properties of a person are
'realized in' the physical properties of that person, and that all
instantiations of properties in macroscopic objects are realized in
microphysical states of affairs. Shoemaker offers an account of both these sorts
of realization, one which allows the realized properties to be causally
efficacious. He also explores the implications of this account for a wide range
of metaphysical issues, including the nature of persistence through time, the
problem of material constitution, the possibility of emergent properties, and
the nature of phenomenal consciousness.
