Hydnellum aff caeruleum

Looking and feeling like a polypore, this small fungus was found in dense leaf litter, under she-oaks. The colours were very bright, byt faded somewhat on handling. It had deep red exudate droplets on the top surface, and on inspection, was found to have minute teeth irreegulalry scattered on the underside of the top 'cap' surface. Cutting it open (it was very tough like velvety leather) revealed distinct zonings.

No Australian book I know of mentions this type of fungi. The only mention is in David Arora's Mushrooms Demystified p625 where he describes Hydnellum caeruleum. However, this Hudnellum was coverd in drops of red exudate, a characteristic he puts down to H. cyanopodium.
