The patterns are created by cellular automata: algorithms which use simple rules to generate complexity. A brief explanation of how they work can be found here. The pictures above are just links to my favourites - there are quite a few more which will randomly load on refresh.
Most of the cellular automata applets on this page are modified slightly from Paul Saretok. The ones that load automatically are written by George Maydwell.
